Mohamed Zayani's Book wins NCA Book Award
CIRS Fellow Mohamed Zayani has been awarded the 2017 “Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award” from the National Communication Association (NCA) for his book Networked Publics and Digital Contention: The Politics of Everyday Life in Tunisia (Oxford UP, 2015).
The book prize is awarded by the Applied Communication Division of the NCA, and honors a book that makes significant contributions in applied communication theory and research. The award will be conferred at the NCA's 103rd Annual Convention, which will take place this year in Dallas, Texas.
The accolade is the fourth Prize Zayani’s book received. It was previously awarded the "Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology Book Award," from the American Sociological Association (ASA); "the Global Communication and Social Change Best Book Award," from the International Communication Association (ICA), and "the Toyin Falola Book Award," from the Association of the Global South Studies (AGSS).
Manuel Castells, Wallis Annenberg Chair of Communication Technology and Society, University of Southern California, described Zayani’s book as “one of the best analyses of the social movements that led to the transformation of the Arab world, and a major contribution to the understanding of social movements of the digital age.”
Networked Publics and Digital Contention is one of three book projects, supported by Georgetown University's Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS), that Zayani has recently published. His other work includes Bullets and Bulletins: Media and Politics in the Wake of the Arab Uprisings (with Suzan Mirgani; Oxford UP, 2016) and Digital Middle East: State and Society in the Information Age (Oxford UP, 2018).
"CIRS is proud to have played a part in the publication of three books by Professor Zayani," noted CIRS Director Mehran Kamrava. "The social and political consequences of emerging information and communication technologies on the Middle East is an area of research that CIRS continues to study, and Zayani's work is an important, original contribution on this topic."
